Good Morning to respected Principal Sir, teachers and my dear friends. Today I feel very honored to address all of you on the occasion of International Day of Yoga (IDY). It is indeed a proud moment for India, as Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India.

The gurus and ascetics of India have been practicing yoga since ages. All of them have benefited physically and mentally from this. International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on 21st June all over the world.

This day of 21st June is the longest day of the year and according to astrology it is the right time to gain spiritual power. Yoga also helps a person to live longer.

Yoga Day was celebrated for the first time on 21st June 2015, which was initiated by the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on 27th September 201. After which June 21st was declared as “International Day of Yoga”. On 11th December 2014, the proposal to celebrate “International Yoga Day” on 21st June was approved by 177 members of the United Nations.

The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’. Yoga means the union of the individual consciousness or soul with the universal consciousness. It is a gift to humanity.

Today’s children are mentally stressed like adults. Increasing competition in schools and colleges, dealing with peer pressure, difficult phase of puberty, extra-curricular activities and meeting the expectations of parents and teachers are very stressful for children. The best way to deal with this pressure is by practicing yoga. Yoga affects children’s emotions and behavior; It has a positive effect on the mental state and aids in creativity. Nowadays adults are suffering from more stress and diseases like depression are becoming common. Yoga helps us to stay healthy and fresh and attain peace of mind. In this busy lifestyle, it is possible to achieve a healthy body and a healthy life only by adopting yoga.

Since its inception, International Yoga Day has become extremely popular not only in India but also in other parts of the world and is celebrated enthusiastically even in the remotest corners of the globe. The first observance of International Yoga Day in India was celebrated on 21st June in 2015 along with the world, which was remarkable. It was the largest yoga class ever recorded, with 35,985 people attending. Prime Minister Modi himself and dignitaries from 84 countries performed various asanas for about 35 minutes. When yoga was performed live at Rajpath, New Delhi, millions of people around the world were also performing it in front of their TVs. It was the biggest covered event which received a global response like never before.

People from different countries, speaking completely different languages unite on this day for only one reason – to achieve good health. The world has only recently realized the potential of Yoga – This can have many benefits for physical and mental health. It infuses confidence and positive energy in the body. The feeling of positively flows through yoga, due to which the body does not become a home of diseases. Yoga increases the immunity of our body. The mind remains calm and concentrated. Yoga increases morale in a person and due to positive feelings, a person’s mental development takes place.

The theme for International Yoga Day 2024 is “Yoga for Women Empowerment”. The theme aims to promote women’s health and well-being, as well as world peace and health. 

Let’s be a part of the change that yoga seeks to bring about in our physical, mental health and spiritual well being. Let us all try to spread the glory of Yoga as much as possible, so that India can be more proud of its cultural heritage.
